Summary/Abstract: At the beginning of the XX century, sites of memory for the main urban cultural communities – Swedish, Finnish, and Russian one – were formed in the urban space of Vyborg. This process resulted in the installation of monuments to relevant cultural “heroes”. This installation caused confrontation between urban elites, which was reflected on the pages of the periodical press of the Grand Duchy of Finland. This article for the first time examines the collision of cultures, interests, and ideologies in Vyborg revealed by the installation of a monument to Peter the Great in 1910. The conflict between historical memories of urban cultures is investigated in the context of studies that address collective memory and the formation of national identity in one of the most detached regions of the Russian Empire. The installation of the monument to Peter the Great, which was meant to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Siege of Vyborg, was received with hostility by Swedish and Finnish elites.
