Summary/Abstract: Shamsaddin Sami Frashiri was one of the prominent representatives of the Ottoman trend, the first stage of modern Turkish nationalism. Shamsaddin Sami was originally an Albanian, interested in the national issues of Albania, and simultaneously wanted to modernize and strengthen the Ottoman state. For this reason, he stressed the importance of the Turkish language, which is considered the common language of the great state. Shamsaddin Sami has made great contributions to the study, modernization and development of the Turkish language. Shamsaddin Sami is the author of the first Turkish novel in Turkish letters, “Taashshuk-i Talat” and “Fitnat”, the first Turkish encyclopedia, “Kamus-ul Alam”, and the first large-scale Turkish dictionary, “Kamus-i Turki”. He also prepared French dictionaries called “Kamûs-ı Fransevî” and Arabic dictionaries called “Kamûs-ı Arabî”. Shamsaddin Sami, together with his elder brother Abdul Frashiri, developed the first Albanian alphabet using Latin and Greek letters and wrote an Albanian grammar book.
