Summary/Abstract: “Soft Storey ” is an irregular building configuration that is one of the major causes of serious earthquake damage. Buildings with this irregularity, mainly resulting from architectural design decisions, have been considered by engineers as “vulnerable” to earthquakes. In terms of legal regulations regarding earthquakes, irregularity situations require the application of special considerations in structural design and analysis. Most urban zoning arrangements in modern cities involve uses that do not require special considerations, and in some cases buildings with irregularity are necessarily constructed. In this article, the architectural reasons for the existence of structural irregularities are analyzed and the detrimental effects of buildings on earthquake behavior are explained in conceptual terms. These effects are discussed from an interdisciplinary perspective within the scope of engineering, architecture and urban planning. Because the elimination of problems can only be achieved with an integrated approach that accepts the interaction between these disciplines. In the study, examples of damage caused by these effects were analyzed.
