Summary/Abstract: Under the immense influence of Mochnacki’s literary criticism that, in turn, took its shape under the authority of Mme de Staël, the relationship between Polish and German literature at the beginning of the 19th century were looked upon from the French perspective. Nevertheless, Mickiewicz read both Schiller and the Schlegel brothers without the French filter. When Jena {Frühromantik} is compared directly with {Ballady i romanse} by Mickiewicz, it becomes obvious that the goal of Polish, and not only German, Romanticism was a restoration, or an eschatological second coming of Greek poetry.
