Summary/Abstract: This article presents a few representations of the native and non-native foreign language teachers (for the sake of simplicity, the author uses the terms „native (foreign) language teacher” and „non-native (foreign) language teacher” as synonyms to – respectively – „a teacher who is a native speaker of the language taught” and „a teacher who is not a native speaker of the language taught”). It invites readers to go beyond these representations and proposes a global reflection on the roles and functions that native and non-native teachers can fulfil within the field of foreign language teaching. The article also aims to show that it is mainly the ability to create teaching tools and to share knowledge which determines and strengthens the professional competences of both native and non-native teachers alike.
