Summary/Abstract: Romania in the 20th-century was characterised by urban revolution. Urban growth was more pronounced in the time of socialism, when the present network of regional poles and sub-regional centres was formed. This rapid expansion also gave rise to a number of social, economic, and urban challenges. The urbanisation process in Transylvania, Partium, and Banat led to linguistic, ethnic, and cultural changes. As of 1920, Romanian language steadily gained ground in centres where the dominant language used to be Hungarian and German. Apart from two smaller groups, the process of language shift can be considered almost complete in most county seats. However, it has not occurred in two current county seats, while some others still function as bilingual towns.
