Summary/Abstract: This paper aims to highlight, starting from the few curricula and school copy-books preservedin archives, the very rare memoirs and articles in the periodicals of the time, what pupils studied and learnt in the mythology and chronology classes; the intellectual scope of the teachers; their link to recent European bibliography as well as to the topics of scientific discussions in academia. The study of these findings results in a truthful attempt to identify some identity sensibilities, national creeds and a form of patriotism in keeping with the spirit which was stirring Europe in the first half of the 19th century. Historical culture claimed through legends and traditions mostly rooted in local events and characters had an impact on popular literature, still to be untangled Romanian historiography
