Summary/Abstract: Mark Antun de Dominis played a significant part in intellectual circles at the turn of the 17th century in the sphere of natural sciences and theology. He was the Bishop of Senj and later the Archbishop of Split. His service was marked with the conflict between two interpretations of Christianity and the study of Jesus Christ, which was in turn linked to the issue of Church organization and frequent abuse of church and papal authority. From this aspect the aim is to clarify the concept of understanding the freedom of Archbishop Mark Antun de Dominis and provide answers to the question why twice in his life he changed his religion, from Catholic to Protestant and back. He tried to find a way to avoid future European religious separation and conflicts, such as the Thirty Years’ War. If just this aspect is taken into consideration, the greatness of a person like Mark Antun de Dominis can be grasped, greatness that, from political and theological aspect, laid in his openness to the world.
