Summary/Abstract: The subject of this article will be the analysis of the application of two modern linguistic approaches to the ancient text.It is about M. Halliday's systemic functional linguistics (SFL) and critical discourse analysis (CDA) through whose patterns we will analyze Suetonius' account of two Roman emperors, Augustus and Nero. Since the language is a strong link between SFL as a linguistic approach and CDA, a movement that unites several different disciplines, including linguistic ones, focused on social change, this article will try to shed light on the role, connection and effectiveness of SFL and CDA in a biographical presentation of a personalities.Critical discourse analysis defines language as a social practice, an essential component of creating social relations and changing them;therefore, it focuses on the language in use - discourse, and analyzes it within the broader social, political, historical, cultural and any other context in which it is realized. This is largely due to SFL, which bases its theory on the purpose of the language and the linguistic choices of the authors. The analysis will focus on creating representations of the origins and military-political personalities of these two Roman emperors based on the transitive structures used by the author; we will observe the author's choices and the application of lexical and grammatical means as well as their combination through two biographical periods. By analyzing the texts through the patterns of SFL transitivity, we will show that the perception of Augustus and Nero's personality as we have it today depends not only on themselves or their achievements, but on the way the author presented them through his own lexical-grammatical choices and their combinations. Discursive analysis will show that objectivity in the depiction of their characters is only an illusion because the whole picture depends on the author's intention to portray them in a certain way, thus influencing the creation of the perception of the readers themselves. Keywords: system functional linguistics, critical discourse analysis, transitivity, modality, collocation, context, function, meaning, historiography, biography Article History Received: 17 May 2021Accepted: 10 June 2021Journal of Education and Humanities Volume 4, Issue 1, Summer 2021depends not only on themselves or their achievements, but on the way the author presented them through his own lexical-grammatical choices and their combinations.
