Summary/Abstract: The occupation of Kuwait by Iraqi army units on August 2, 1990, was a large-scale violent operation in the Middle East after the fall of the Berlin Wall (an event that created the conditions for German reunification and the end of the Cold War). The conflict sparked by dictator Saddam Hussein has stunned the world. The United Nations was surprised by the speed of the Iraqi operation, and news of the invasion amplified fears among neighboring states - particularly in Saudi Arabia and Israel. With the exception of Foreign Minister Tarik Aziz and another Iraqi diplomat, no other official in Saddam Hussein's inner circle told foreign officials and international organizations the reason for the decision to occupy Kuwait. The Iraqi invasion of August 2, 1990, put an end to the political ambiguity of the White House. Since then, the United States has clearly expressed its immediate goal in the Middle East: the unconditional withdrawal of the Iraqi army and administration from Kuwait. The diplomatic efforts that took place in the following months proved futile.
