Summary/Abstract: Practical wisdom, phronesis, is a concept used by Gadamer to achieve an ontological reorientation of its hermeneutics. Gadamer remains close to Aristotle when it deals with phronesis, however, he delimits himself from it, in agreement with Levinas’s thinking, when the relationship between existence and essence is under discussion, attributing a starring role to existence in order to overcome a philosophy of transcendence and one of immanence with the effect of neutralizing otherness. Phronesis accounts for the concrete existence, has a reciprocal relationship with action, it unfolds in the sphere of ethics, i.e. of relationship. It involves deliberation, kindness, tolerance, wisdom for the resulting action concerns all the time the other.
