Summary/Abstract: Museology was introduced as a subject at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Belgrade in the academic year 1948/1949. Although the connection between museum professionals and educational activities at the University of Belgrade had been established long before, general social changes in post-war Yugoslavia were of great importance for the introduction of a new subject. The introduction of museology was preceded by supervision of museum staff, as well as university professors. The evaluation was disapproving, both in museums and at the university. The “old” past had to be given a “new” clothes, and museology, understood as a combination of museum activities and higher education, was seen as an appropriate instrument for achieving such a goal. On the one hand, the introduction of museology into university program was a resource to prevent the “ideological weaknesses” of the future museum staff. On the other hand, university program would get a new subject, precisely in the historical group of the Faculty of Philosophy, where ideological situation was seen as the most difficult and unacceptable. Nevertheless, the social reality, conditioned by the small number of experts in the field of museology and the specifics of their methodology, led to the situation that introduction of museology at the University of Belgrade to be entrusted to pre-war museum professionals, with approach close to Western European tradition.
