Summary/Abstract: In this article, the author presents the figure of Ioan Ţăranu (1884-1949), one of the invisible artisans of the victories obtained by the Romanian Army in 1917, the first counter-intelligence officer and one of the theorists of this type of activity. Since the beginning of his career, he has been remarked in the headquarters of major units where he worked since the autumn of 1916 because of his knowledge, the seriousness with which he has performed his duties in all the garrisons and, last but not least, his leadership qualities. Ioan Ţăranu was the first to organize and structure the counter informative field, with an emphasis on counterintelligence and the Secret Service, being the first professional officer in these activities, required both for an intelligence service and especially for a state. At the same time, he proved to be a good information analyst, collected both from public sources as well as from the processing of materials received from Romanian agents behind the enemy front, or from capturing documents from the military officers, dead or prisoners, from the Triple Alliance states.
