Summary/Abstract: The profound changes that took place in the last couple of centuries in science and technology brought important changes to the library concept. This article will exemplify how, starting from the classical library model of universal collections or of research libraries for science and technology, through the development of these fields, we witnessed a democratization of library services. We can now talk about public libraries that have special collections and branches dedicated for science and technology, libraries that got involved in opening access to specialized journals for the public or libraries that offer innovative technologies.
