Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article was to analyze new concepts for urban development. The article uses data and forecasts regarding economic development, population, social well-being index and ecological footprint. European cities are successfully implementing elements of sustainable concepts, but these measures are not enough. Above all, there is a lack of a systemic approach to tackling the challenges of 21st century cities. For this reason, actions are taken only at the fragmentary level, which limits the possibilities of full development of urban centers. Modern cities face many social, economic and environmental problems. By 2050, almost 7 billion people will live in cities. The progressing urbanization process can be seen on all continents. In North America, this rate exceeds 80% and should be expected to increase further. The solution may be proecological development concepts that imply an improvement in the quality of life of society, economic development and environmental protection.
