Summary/Abstract: Unemployment is a companion of modern society and one of the biggest problems of today’s world. This phenomenon is not unfamiliar to Lithuania today, nor was it during the days of First Republic. When did it appear? Unemployment is associated with reflections of the industrial revolution and formation of modern society in Lithuania. Therefore, the term “unemployment” in this article is used as emerging or already formed integral part of the modern concept of work. This phenomenon appeared in Lithuania during the crisis years of 1900–1903, when a working class had already been formed, while unemployment was perceived and absorbed as a socio-economic concept not only in economic life but also in literature and everyday speech.
