Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the historical kontext of the examples used by Vladimír Macura for the development of his theory of překladovost/culture as translation. Some argu ments from the debates of the 19th century on translation are echoed by Macura, as he examines culture forming translation as a Czech national characteristic and thus fits it into a national historiography that he actually questions critically. An observance of this context is recommended for further development of his thinking for current discussions on cultural translation.
