Summary/Abstract: Two Conversations, which were selected from Kafka’s unfinished novell Description of a Strug gle, display an epistemological intentionality that is related to a critique of language. They furthermore contain references to the philosophy of Anton Marty, whose lectures Kafka attended as a student in Prague. These expose the ostensible identity of proper names to the criticism of Marty’s anti nominalist discourse. This philosophical context becomes apparent only in light of the letters that make up the disputation between the conceptu alist Marty and his teacher Franz Brentano, written against the latter’s “Copernican turn” towards nominalism. This connection, in turn, allows us to confirm Kafka’s attempt at realism in his novel The Trial.
