Summary/Abstract: The foundation of the Calvinist Gymnasium for Girls in Cluj Napoca appears as a fi nalmoment in the long process of inclusion of girls in the circle of middle-level education that started in the second half of the19th century. After several attempts failed, mostly due to fi nancial constraints and/or the presence of WWI, the school beganits activity in 1919, at fi rst, in the building of the Calvinist College for boys and then, in the newly built school of CalvinistGymnasium for Girls, where teaching started at the beginning of 1927. My research focuses on the media presentation ofthe school, the educational process and its participants in the local printed press between 1926 and 1940. Through a highlygendered description of both the school’s everyday activities, and outstanding/ritual events (graduation exams, festive eventsetc.), the local press conveys the views of a still patriarchal society yet through the theme of education and modernizationcaptures the emergence of the fi rst “proto-feminist” ideas.
