Summary/Abstract: Our study deals with some aspects regarding the evolution of the ports on the Danube and of their harbour master’s offices, between 1878 and 1916. The scientific interest related to the problem of the Danube and of the main Romanian ports on the Danube is fully justified, considering the major role that the old river played both in the national history and in the European history. The period of time which will be studied is the one comprised between 1878 and 1916, when harbour master’s offices of the Romanian ports on the Danube started immediately after Romania became an independent country ( in 1878 ), at the same time with the development of a national riveran fleet (The Romanian Riveran Navigation) and of a national navy (The Danube Division). Harbour master’s offices have been organized in the most important ports on the Danube: Bechet, Brăila, Calafat, Călăraşi, Cetatea, Corabia, Cernavodă, Galaţi, Giurgiu, Gruia, Gura Ialomiţei, Hârşova, Isaccea, Măcin, Olteniţa, Oltina, Ostrov, Sulina, Turnu Măgurele, Turnu Severin, Tulcea, Zimnicea. At a same time, a set of ,,Regulations for the police of the ports and the banks of the Danube on the territory of Romania,, has been established. It comprised general regulations concerning the ships supplying the ports, those halting in the ports or going out of them, of dispositions concerning the ships meeting in the harbours, regulations for night time navigation.Once the First World War started, the bay of the Danube has also become a conflict area. Having in view a better account of the situation by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and by the Ministry of War, some preventive measures have been taken. The measures stipulated things such as the compulsion that the foreign ships should spend the winter in the locations established by the Romanian military officialties so that the eventual incidents on the territory of Romania maybe prevented. In the period between 1915 and 1916, military harbour master’s offices have been organized, aiming at a better control of the conflicts which might have occurred in the ports due to the divergent interests of the two parties involved in the World War, in case Romania had maintained its neutrality, and aiming at a better management of the military operations undertaken by the country, in case Romania had joined the War.
