Summary/Abstract: The article presents the most significant conceptions of Paul Tillich, with special focus on the theological and philosophical inspirations which shaped his original understanding of the specificity of religion, especially Christianity. He sees the latter as a possibility to experience the dimension of depth – a meeting and dialogue with God, but also in a broader context, to strive to reach the ground of being, that is the Unconditioned. The author also scrutinizes anthropological inspirations in the ethical reflection of Tillich, who defined man as a „split” creature and looked for ways to integrate the human being. Such an opportunity revealed itself in an interesting concept of theonomy, that is ethics directed in its norms and goals towards the dimension of depth and creating in culture some space for spiritual values. The last part of the article references Tillich’s concept of the courage of being. The spotlight is on the difficulties in adopting this approach in the living conditions of modern men. Their focus on meeting material needs can deprive them of the opportunity to experience the deeper dimension of life.
