Summary/Abstract: Decline in population size, decline of fertility and aging of society are increas-ingly being associated with decline in well-being and perceived as a threat to quality of life. Particularly intensive processes are apparent in large cities and their nearest surroundings. The article presents current demographic trends observed in large cities and their implica-tions. The analysis is conducted for Poznań in comparison to selected major cities in Poland. The aim of the study is to evaluate the differences in demographic structures and processes in large cities and surrounding municipalities in the period between population censuses in 2002 and 2011.
