On 'hype' and high expectations for science and technology

Summary/Abstract: The article concerns a specific narrative related to technological progress and scientific development. Hype is defined here as the excessive excitement that accompanies technology, new products or scientific progress. In the text the author analyses hype in the context of social conditions in which science is developed today. Two important circumstances that are conducive to the emergence of this narrative in the social space are pointed out - capitalism and democracy. The article also presents examples of hype from the media.
