Summary/Abstract: Background: In the last decade, the higher education system in Poland has changed several times in various aspects, however, the main areas of activity remained almost unchanged. However, so far, firstly, the individual basic tasks of universities beyond the three main ones, i.e., teaching, scientific and research activities, and knowledge transfer, have not been analyzed. Secondly, there has been no comprehensive assessment of the state of their implementation in higher education. Research purpose: The article attempts to measure both the individual basic tasks of public academic institutions in Poland as defined in the Act on Higher Education, and to verify the overall status of their implementation in the surveyed units. Methods: The universities were ranked based on the values of variables assigned to each university task and the synthetic indicator in terms of the total state of their implementation. Conclusions: The unquestionable leaders of the general ranking were the following universities: Warsaw University and Jagiellonian University in Krakow. On the other hand, the worst overall score was achieved by the University of Technology and Humanities in Bielsko-Biala and the Kielce University of Technology. The results of universities in particular tasks are differentiated depending on the activity area examined
