Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the sonata form in the first movements of Mozart’s String Quartets with the intention of shedding light on the status of the recapitulation. The focus on that part of the sonata form is due to the fact that, without a detailed insight into the rest of the musical content, it is the most frequently mentioned in the context of changes in relation to the exposition.. The objective of the paper is to highlight the deficiencies of the analytic ‘rule–exception’ approach, and thus to present certain distinctive compositional solutions in regards to the potential reasons for particular treatments of the recapitulation. The analysis shows that, aside from the standard concept (kv 421, kv 575, kv 499 and kv 590), the composer resorts to some significant changes that affect the dramaturgy of the recapitulation, as well as of the sonata form itself.
