Summary/Abstract: Language and culture are undistinguishable and without a common socio-cultural background shared by the speaker and the interlocutor, the mere existence of a common linguistic code proves to be insufficient in the translation of jokes. The cultural elements specific to the source language must be transferred into the target language. In the case of the translation of jokes, however, this can be extremely difficult to the extent that some linguistic features and socio-cultural elements are so deeply rooted in that specific language community that beyond the boundaries of this community, the joke does not have the intended effect.
