Summary/Abstract: Derivation is a productive process in language. The remarks on the derivation of proper nouns in the poems of Hesiod led to the following conclusions: - the derivation suffixes employed are archaic; they also appear in the epic poem of Homer and they cannot offer any insights on the author’s creativity; - the element of novelty at Hesiod is represented by the folk origin suffixes. One of the common processes employed by Hesiod is the hypostasization of common nouns and especially of adjectives. The fact that that the adjective had distinct suffixes varying according to the grammatical gender allowed Hesiod to create nominal pairs. The derivation from a verbal root is richer and subtler as far as the suffixes employed are concerned.
