Medical risk products: certification by Majelis Ulama Indonesia

Summary/Abstract: This study aims to elucidate the consideration of Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI) in granting halal labels to products that are considered medically risky and may cause a revision of Islamic law on MUI halal labeling from the point of view of maslahah (public interest; a basis of law) and qawaid fiqhiyyah (or legal maxims) theory. The aspects of ethics, law and economic effects versus health effects are discussed. This article uses a qualitative approach. The data were obtained through an interview with officials of the Central MUI and nutritionists over the year 2020. Other supporting data were obtained through literature reviews from various researches. The result shows that the consideration of MUI in granting halal include its believe in a medical perspective that the negative effects of these products can still be neutralized by the body’s immune system and eating healthy foods.
