Summary/Abstract: This research comes as a result of our observations on the Bulgarian syntactic heritage. This article presents an analytical approach towards the syntactic terms and notions related to 'verbal composition' of the Bulgarian Grammar Corpus (1835–2000). Through a peculiar 'decomposition' of the definitions of a sentence is 63 Bulgarian grammar books, the generic features are outlined though the prism of the classical mechanism of defining the Latin notions of per genus proximum et differentiam specifica-proximum et, from the closest class to the type characteristic. The same features are diachronically observed all the way to today's understanding of the nature of a sentence. As a result a new definition of a sentence is proposed, based on the generic feature of 'self-generating structure'.
