Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the connection between the emergence of the fields of formal grammar and machine translation in Bulgarian linguistics in 1960–1965. In the context of intercultural transfer, the core ideas of machine translation are outlined as motivating the first generative grammars. The officially proclaimed total front of mathematics in Bulgaria, including machine translation and formal grammar, is described. The text focuses on the leading figures, research groups and specific ideas, determining the beginning of these fields in Bulgaria in their correlation.
