Summary/Abstract: The article presents Nikolai Todorov’s (1921–2003) scholarly, administrative, diplomatic and political achievements in light of the 100th anniversary of his birth. He played a key role in founding of the Institute of Balkan Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the Centre international d’information sur les sources de l‘histoire balkanique et méditeranéenne – CIBAL, of the Institute for Foreign Policy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He also significantly contributed to the establishment of Balkan Studies as a particular discipline within the humanities. Furthermore, he held a variety of administrative, political, and diplomatic positions, including co-founder, Vice-president (1963–1974) and President (1974–1979) of the Association Internationale d‘Etudes du Sud-Est Europeen (AIESEE), ambassador of Bulgaria in Greece (1979–1983), Vice-president of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (1983-1988), President of the 23rd Conference General of UNESCO (1985–1987), deputy and President of the Great National Assembly (1990–1991). As a scholar and author of over 400 publications, he was renowned for his research on the social history of the Balkans in the 15th-19th century, the liberation struggles of the Balkan peoples and their collaboration, etc. Many of his monographs were published abroad in foreign languages. For his academic achievements, Nikolai Todorov received prestigious awards in Bulgaria, Greece, France, and Italy.
