The Situation and Fate of the Archives of Writers

Summary/Abstract: The author presents the fate of the literary archives in Transylvanian Hungarian literature in a diachronic overview, beginning with the 1970s, when a well-conceived publishing program of the Kriterion publishing house became a model for future projects in the field. The political changes in 1989 created new opportunities for researching and preserving literary archives. The Szabédi House in Cluj, in the administration of the Hungarian Cultural Society Of Transylvania (EMKE) became in 1996 an important site for such activities. The author discusses the necessary institutional and financial aspects that would lead to a sustainable preservation and research activity within the field.
