THE PHENOMENON OF THE UNACKNOWLEGED THROUGH THE EXAMPLE OF THE UNPUBLISHED TRANSLATIONS BY ANASTAS GJ. TAHOVSKI OF CLASSICAL WORKS

Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the unpublished Macedonian translations of classical literary works carried out by the classical philologist Anastas Gj. Tahovski. This corpus of Macedonian translations of classical literature consists of eleven titles: The Women Celebrating the Thesmophoria (Thesmophoriazousai) and The Birds (Ornithes) by Aristophanes, The Persians (Persai) by Aeschylus and the Roman play Octavia; selected parts from Virgil’s Aeneid (Aenē̆is), Herodotus’ History (Historíai̯) and the Fables of Phaedrus (Fabulae), as well as two letters with great historical value from Pliny the Younger. This paper provides a general overview of the characteristics of the translations, the time period in which they have occurred, as well as their significance for the current Macedonian cultural setting in which they are introduced after more than fifty years of their occurrence.
