Summary/Abstract: This article deals with the notion of alternation in the domain of argument realisation or diathesis. A working definition is offered, and a survey is given of the most characteristic instances of this phenomenon in Lithuanian. A number of important approaches to this subject, including those offered in the tradition of Lithuanian grammar, are discussed. Finally, a new approach to Lithuanian alternations and their position in the Lithuanian language system is proposed within the framework of Applicative Grammar.
