Summary/Abstract: In this essay, I shall proceed from the etymology of the Greek word ‘canon’ in its historical formation, i.e. before 900; ME, OE < L < Gk kanōn, a measuring rod or a rule, later extended to designate a list or a catalogue, and then to denote the books of the Bible recognized by Christian church as genuine.
