Summary/Abstract: In trade, various signs are used, with the main purpose, for professionals to differentiate themselves from competitors and to gain the trust of the consumers, offering them quality products and services. However, there are also professionals who choose the short path to success, preferring, instead of creating their own distinctive signs, to parasitize those that already exist and are known. These signs can be of several kinds and used in various combinations. The purpose of this study is to present by comparison the protection systems of all types of trademarks with those of geographical indications at national level in Romania and at EU level. Conflict situations and cases of coexistence between brands and geographical indications will also be presented.
