Summary/Abstract: Our inquiry has as a starting point a small fragment of John Rawls’s book A Theory of Justice, essential for understanding the author’s belief regarding the organization of society in accordance with an ideal justice where the notion of fairness plays a fundamental role. This fragment defines two principles of justice which Rawls considers as fulcrums for his theory: the principle of equality and the principle of difference. The first must justify the imperative of humans’ equality before the law, the second one includes in itself the foundation of "just inequalities". The controversies surrounding these two principles represent a conclusive proof regarding the difficulties which a theory trying to rationally explain the idea of justice must overcome.
