Summary/Abstract: The battles in the Călimani Mountains region, from August 29 to September 17, 1916, were a tactical military action that took place on the Romanian Front. These battles were attended by units of the 14th Infantry Division — Călimani Cover Detachment, under the command of Lt. col.Chirițescu, consisting of the 3rd Battalion of the 56th Infantry Regiment, the 4th Battalion of the 16th Infantry Regiment and a battery of mountain cannons cal. 63 mm, who faced soldiers and gendarmes of the Austro-Hungarian 1st Army, commanded by General Arz von Straussenburg. This study is based on unique information extracted from the funds of the Central Archive Deposit, of the Military Archives of Pitesti, which provides a complex picture of the context of these operations and of the way in which they took place. Although the established mission — taking control of the Călimani Mountains — ended in failure for the Romanian army units, the courage and sacrificial spirit of the officers and soldiers, who fought in particularly difficult conditions, make these battles important in terms of military history.
