Summary/Abstract: Gennaro Antonio Federico (1726-1743) was a lawyer and highly regarded writer of comedy in Naples in the eighteenth century. Three of his books, chosen by Pergolesi, were highly regarded and enjoyed great popularity. These were: Lo Frate 'nnamorato (1732), La Serva Padrona (1733) and Il Flaminio (1735). At Serva Padronaera an intermezzo, the other two works being musicals. Described in the Italian language of the time, it is said that his libretto for La Serva Padrona adopts the rhythms and inflections of the Neapolitan dialect, which Gennaro Antonio Federico exploited for the comic and dramatic effect. This libretto provided the composer with a means of expression, facilitating a natural expression of the characters' emotions and intentions.
