Summary/Abstract: The present article focuses on the cultural and philanthropic role played by the Mihail family in Romanian society and especially in Oltenia. At the end of the nineteenth century and early twentieth-century, members of this family are involved in the onset and development of numerous cultural institutions: agricultural school model Barza, the Philharmonic Society of Craiova. They provided with large sums the Carol I High School and granted the students of this institution many scholarships and books. Just after the death of the last male representative of this family, in 1936, the Romanian state became the legatee of all properties with specific missions: the foundation of upper agriculture school in Bucharest, a hospital in Caracal and some maternities in Bucharest and Craiova, improving the situation of rural churches, and mutual aid for the poorest people.
