Summary/Abstract: Sociologist, philosopher, professor, a member of the Parliament and a minister of Education, Petre Andrei is one of the most complex personalities of the Romanian culture in the interwar period. As a professor, he was one of those who fought against introducing politics into the University, being, throughout his life, a relentless opponent against extremism, both fascist and bolshevist. The change of political regime in 1940 Romania, when King Charles II gave up the throne and the legionaries led by marshal Antonescu tool hold of power, had dramatic consequences for Petre Andrei. On October 4th 1940, after his home had been searched and when the legionaries were preparing to put him under arrest, he chose to end his life. Ignored for many years, he was rediscovered after 1970, when his works began to be edited and reprinted. In 1991, he was elected as a post-mortem member of the Romanian Academy.
