Summary/Abstract: The communist regimes displayed, from its inception, a strong capacity towards cultic practices, in which the role of the leader assumed a central position. The totalitarian regimes of the 20th century, with their powerful leader cults, their elitist organisations and doctrines, had as their avowed aim the integration of the masses into political process as a community of believers. The success of authoritarian, highly ideologised political regimes was a product of internal crisis.
