Summary/Abstract: The names of medicinal plants are a very rich source of various information, whether about the language or ethnicity. Ethnolinguistic studies are important for understanding an ethnic group’s ideas on the world, expressed in its language. The names of plants are older or younger, motivated or they are understood as un-motivated, as it is not possible to de¬termine the motivation of the name. In this article, we try to clarify how Slovaks, Czechs, Russians and Belarusians per¬ceive their surrounding world, and how they interpret it through the motivation of the generic (or genus) names of plants. The linguistic structure of naming helps us to reveal the worldview, which Bartmiński calls “linguistic worldview”. It is a language-entrenched interpretation of reality, which can be expressed in the form of judgments about the world, people, things, or events. It is an interpretation, not a reflection.
