Summary/Abstract: This article provides evidence that pastoral folklore contains information about the evolutionof the economic, social and politico-administrative situation of some territories east of the Carpathians. Theyare important for studying the past of the romanian population in this much-suffered territory from the periodbefore 1400, less reflected in the written documents. For example, the ballad Mioriţa contains three layers. Inthe first layer would be reflected the social processes of the VIII-IX centuries, which are at the foundation of thementioned ballad and constitute the national element of the folk work. The second level reflects the tragic event of1359, in the valley of Moldova. During the following centuries, until it was collected by Aleco Russo and publishedby Vasile Alecsandri, the names of the characters of the ballad were specified, along with the hungarian and moldavian appearing the vrancean name, unknown in historical documents prior to the fifteenth century. Historicallyrelevant information is also contained in the ballad Costea.
