Summary/Abstract: The legal history of childhood is also a history of the family and of the status of persons, endowed with a sinuous evolution and many backward ages If we limit ourselves to private law and the European continental legal area, we could trace this evolution from the initial landmark of Roman law up to the contemporary age, with symbolic layovers in the Middle Ages, post-medieval era and in the 19th century. This study traces some fundamental landmarks of the historical evolution of the status of children in private law in European society, with a special regard for the persecuted category of children born out of wedlock: family status, parental power, alimony rights, and inheritance rights. This being a legal history study, we will stop at the boundary of the present times, summarily judging the situation nowadays with the experience of historical hindsight.
