Summary/Abstract: Bulgarian architect Milko Bichev is a bright example of an architectural historian and theorist of national and European significance. Inquisitive, reflective and fascinated by the exchange of ideas between different European cultures, he dedicated his research to the interrelation between this cultural exchange and the development of the Bulgarian city and society during the National Revival period. The article studies Bichev’s biography and scientific and academic work, focusing on his seminal treatise on Bulgarian Baroque, the reception of his oeuvre by his peers and his role in the scientific discourse on the origins of the architecture of the Bulgarian National Revival period.
