The personality of Marcel Mihalovici as reflected in two unknown documents

Summary/Abstract: The text offers a biographical portrayal of the composer marking the most important moments of his career and highlighting certain details of his life and work. This is the reason why the author focused in his research also on the correspondence, interviews, unique articles, and valuable testimonies to his oeuvre and his time. Alongside artists such as George Enesco, Constantin Brancusi, Tristan Tzara, Ionesco, and Emil Cioran, the composer Mihalovici is considered today as part of the cultural elite of Romanian origin who established themselves abroad, in Paris. Discovered and appreciated for the first time by George Enesco, he was formedunder the tutorship of Dimitrie Cuclin, in Bucharest, and of Vincent d’Indy in Paris; moreover, during his career, he established contact with remarkable personalities of the international cultural life such as pianist Monique Haas, writer Samuel Beckett, conductor and composer Igor Markevich, Cornel Țăranu, the Codreanu sisters, sculptor Constantin Brâncuși, Erik Satie, Nadia Boulanger, Paul Constantinescu, Dinu Lipatti and Paul Sacher. The rediscovery of the personality and the work of Mihalovici has earned its rightful place in the history of Romanian music, in the repertoire of Romanian instrumentalists and singers bringing them to light. Despite being a composer of unquestionable value, Marcel Mihalovici remains an artist rather ignored, considering that the musicological writings devoted to him are few and fragmented as an approach, usually focusing on a narrow segment of his oeuvre.
