Summary/Abstract: Twenty-four million micro, small and medium-sized enterprises in the European Union, accounting for 99% of all enterprises, are the engine of the European economy and the key to its competitiveness. Therefore, the European institutions pursue policies and create conditions so that: they are supported; to make provisions in accordance with the "think small first" principle; to ensure easier access for SMEs to finance and markets; to create readiness on the part of state administrations to respond to the needs of small and medium business. This paper aims to carry out a study of policies to promote entrepreneurship and SMEs in the Czech Republic and Bulgaria. The research of successful policies to support the creation and operation of micro, small and medium enterprises in another EU Member State and the opportunities for transfer and application of foreign experience can contribute to their successful implementation in Bulgaria and to support those wishing to start their own business.
