Summary/Abstract: Energy policy is currently one of the EU’s sectoral policies. Its external dimension is aimed at fostering the achievement of sustainability, competitiveness and the security of supply. In the context of relations with third countries the EU external energy policy is at present focused on: – ensuring stable energy supplies at competitive prices and (often in relation to this) – seeking to reform the energy markets in neighbouring countries in order to harmonise them with the EU market. // This reconciliation of the effectiveness of external actions with the attainment of the objectives of increased self-sufficiency and energy efficiency remains the key challenge for the EU’s external energy policy.
