Summary/Abstract: Inappropriate use or absence of es is one of the most frequent mistakes made by non-native speakers of German at all levels, including German language students and German teachers. We have to look for reasons in the structural differences between German and Czech equivalent constructions. The aim of this publication is to describe in as much detail as possible the Czech counterparts of German constructions with es and to prepare a theoretical background for the formulation of linguistic recommendations for the processing of the given issue in the teaching of the German language by Czech native speakers or in the teaching of the Czech language by German native speakers. The publication is intended for all who are interested in the comparison of Czech and German language structures, for linguists, teachers and students of German as a foreign language and authors of learning and teaching materials. More generally, it is of interest for supporters of corpus linguistics and valency grammar.
